Writer Leo Babauta at Zen Habits captured my heart with a number of his 17 Fitness Truths To Get You in Great Shape.
The entire article is a good read and I recommend it. From my experience and observing that of others, I found the following particularly resonated with me.
- Small steps. In both diet and exercise, small achievable steps are key to making steady, enjoyable progress.
- Enjoy yourself. Find ways to make exercise enjoyable so that you look forward to it. Remember, successful exercisers do it because it makes them feel better.
- Never give up. Or put another way, always start again. Start again tomorrow after a successful experience today. Start again after laying off for two months. Always start again.
- Get a workout partner...one who makes it more enjoyable.
- Rest is important. Learning how to properly rest is a lifelong challenge to exercisers. Remember. The gains come from the rest and recovery. If you don't allow rest and recovery, you'll wind up in any number of forms of pain.
- Focus on your diet first. Millions out-eat exercise programs every day.
